Through a message read on his behalf by the Chief Officer of Trade, Industrialization, Tourism and Wildlife Management Edith Kimani on this year’s Ushirika Day celebrations, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has urged cooperatives in Nakuru County to empower the youths by diversifying their operations and encouraging the culture of saving.
The County Government of Nakuru in cooperation with Tangaza University is implementing a program whereby Saccos and individuals are trained on business management models. This training will enable them acquire important knowledge and skills which will guide them in identifying markets distribution channels and manage their Saccos and enterprises effectively.
Dairy farmers’ cooperatives in Rongai, Kuresoi North, Gilgil, Naivasha, Subukia among other sub-counties have benefited with milk coolers. For other societies to gain from this empowering initiative by the County Government of Nakuru they should have the infrastructures to support this.
'Saccos have immensely contributed towards the growth of the county economy. From a membership 165, 000 people, Saccos in the county have mobilized savings and deposits amounting to Ksh 7 billion. They should keep up this good work and inculcate in the youth the culture of saving as this is a sure way of generating wealth', read the message.
The Ushirika Day was marked in line with the commemoration of the ninety-fourth international day of co-operatives. Locally, this day is referred to as Ushirika and was observed under the theme, ‘power to act for a sustainable future’.
Through their representatives various Sacco’s asked the county government to help in addressing the increasing numbers of brief case Sacco’s whose members have been described as defaulters who keep on moving from one Sacco to the other.
Members from the transport Saccos commended the county government for their increasing support to the sector.
The Nakuru County Director for Cooperatives Mr. Patrick Makonyango urged Saccos to recruit more members so as to increase savings and investments for the future. He, however asked them to follow the laid down regulations to foster a conducive environment for businesses.
Sacco leaders were asked to uphold good leadership and corporate governance to ensure growth of Sacco.
