COOPERATORS IN KERICHO ACCEPT GOVERNOR'S IDEA TO FORM A FARMERS BANK

Kericho County could be the first County to support its residents to who are members of different Cooperatives to form their own bank.

At the event that brought on board all Cooperators from all Corners of the County Governor Paul Chepkwony thanked them for welcoming the investors he had brought to the County to invest,
“I appreciate the people of my County for welcoming the investors. The only way to improve economy is to put petty politics aside and attract investors” he said.

Chepkwony said sweet potatoes from Kericho are currently exported to England.

He further cited that the County has investors who are working on two different Energy productions in Belgut that aims at transforming the economy of the County.

Ongoing Construction of a pineapple factory in Bureti, manufacture of soaps using locally available raw materials and Kabianga Milk processing Company are key areas that have painted Kericho good because of good relationship with the foreign investors.

He said in his previous foreign trip to America he met willing investors who can help start a bank owned by residents at the County.
“We are performing because we are bench-marking with successful Nations in the World. What is possible in America is also possible in Kericho so long as we have great minds and willing hearts” he said.
He added that to grow the bank they would ensure that County’s allocation from the National government will be channeled through it so that all profits and interest goes to pockets of the locals who would be the owners,
The locals hugged the idea from Governor Prof. Paul Chepkwony in a meeting held at Kericho Teachers College and picked individuals to go for benchmarking in America in August.

All Saccos running from farmers Saccos, Women Saccos, Youth based, Transport and professionals’ were all brought on board for a six-hours discussion where each team appreciated Governor’s great mind saying it was the only tool to eliminate poverty.

 

Tea, Sugarcane, Coffee and Dairy farmers’ leadership was incorporated and was happy for selection of individuals to bench-mark with US comes August.

The team of five people; elders, middle-age, youth, women and disable were picked by attendants based on qualifications will be led by Governor to learn in US and will later issue report to the Cooperators that will help in Formation of the bank.

Lord Suge who is the founder of the flush Sinendet Cooperative Society which according to its Chairman Mr. Joseah Sang it started from sh. 3600 but now its worth goes up to 336 Million Kenya shillings accepted Governors idea of uniting farmers for success.
“Unity is the only key to success, we started Sinendet and Mau Tea as a group of locals in 70s and we are now enjoying its benefits so I urge all to unite for success” he said.

Sang lauded Prof. Chepkwony’s idea saying he has great minds and he is ready to transform Kericho County for good citing that Sinendet was able to build the longest house in Kericho “Sinendet Towers” because of members who were receptive to their ideas.

The Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives, KUSCO South Rift regional manager Elias Mwaura who was present applauded the idea saying it befits Kericho which is ranked second in Cooperatives success after Nairobi.

“Kericho is famously known for successful Cooperatives Societies topping in management and performance and that is why Kericho is ranked second after Nairobi is Cooperatives success “he said.
The manager said, Kenya was one of top ten Countries who have successful Cooperative societies and added that such achievement has been contributed by Kericho which is doing well.

The Governor added that he dreams of a County where even the waste products from farm produce manufacturing companies would be used for another benefit saying if maize crop is used to manufacture spirits, its waste should be recycled as livestock feed.

He said he has a long list of investors interested to set up factories in Kericho but prior to that ordered his officers to work round the County to establish whether there were enough raw materials.
